The Center for Disability & Elder Law has a unique and recognizable logo. Please read below to learn more about the history and evolution of how CDEL's logo came to be what it is today and stay tuned throughout 2024 to learn more about CDEL's rich history. |

CDEL began in 1984 as the Legal Clinic for the Disabled. Our mission was to provide pro bono legal services to low-income people with disabilities. At the time, our logo combined an abbreviation of our name (LCD) with the international symbol of access, also known as the wheelchair symbol.
| |
In 1997, LCD expanded its mission and services to include services to low-income senior citizens in the Metropolitan Chicago area. We changed our name from the Legal Clinic for the Disabled to the Center for Disability & Elder Law. In 2003 we introduced our new logo shown here. |
The new logo incorporated the many aspects of our mission, specifically the interdependence of the individual (represented by the head) and the legal system (represented by the pillars). Robert D'Amato of design firm Panebianco contributed this inspired design featuring these elements below: |

2014 marked CDEL's 30th Anniversary year. Maria Gedroc of Gedroc design contributed CDEL's 30th Anniversary logo. Combining important elements of CDEL's past, including our founding by the Chicago Bar Association and its Young Lawyers Section and recognizing the strength of three decades of continuous service to our clients, the 30th Anniversary logo celebrated our heritage and mission. |
| |
In our 40 years of operation, over 54,000 individuals have received services through CDEL. |

CDEL Celebrates its Alumni! |
Thank you to everyone who attended CDEL's Alumni Event at McDonald's on September 11th! It was a great evening of celebration and connection with current and former staff members, interns, and Young Professionals Board (YPB) members. A special thank you to CDEL's YPB for putting on this fun event and to McDonald's and CDEL Governing Board member Talita Ramos Erickson for hosting us in such a beautiful space! In honor of CDEL's 40th Anniversary, CDEL created a CDEL alumni LinkedIn Group for alumni to stay up to date on the latest CDEL news, reconnect with CDEL's mission, and with each other. Come join and say hello! |

CDEL Welcomes Two New Staff Members! |

Eva Adams (she/her) is a 711 Licensed Law Graduate leading CDEL's Housing Preservation Project (HPP). She started at CDEL in 2023 as a Kott Gerontology Scholar during law school and transitioned in this new role earlier this month. Eva earned her J.D. from the Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 2024.
Eva on why she is excited to join CDEL: “Generally, not every legal issue is earth-shattering or life-changing, but working at CDEL as an intern opened my eyes to the fact that it's easy to take for granted what is or is not life-changing. Being able to exercise autonomy by executing a power of attorney or an estate plan is earth-shattering. Knowing that you are secure in your home or knowing that your SSI income is protected is life changing. The work that CDEL does changes people’s lives, and I am excited to return and continue being a part of it.”

Carmen Ontiveros (she/her) is the Bilingual Spanish Paralegal at CDEL. Carmen graduated from Loyola University Chicago in 2002 with a Bachelor of arts degree in Political Science and a certificate in Urban Life and Policy Studies. She also received a Paralegal Certificate from Roosevelt University and also holds a J.D from the John Marshall Law School (UIC Law.)
Carmen on why she is excited about joining CDEL: "I am thrilled to serve in the role of Bilingual English & Spanish Paralegal at CDEL. I am grateful for this opportunity and am looking forward to this new chapter! My goal is to utilize my bilingual skills (Spanish) and legal background to make a difference in the lives of individuals who need our legal support." |

CDEL Reaches Thousands at Three Outreach Events in One Day! |
CDEL was busy in the community on Thursday, September 12th! CDEL held three outreach events around the city reaching thousands of people. CDEL holds outreach and tabling events throughout the community all year long to educate community members and partners about CDEL and its services. It's so great to be able to share our work with the community! |
CDEL tabled at the City of Chicago's annual Senior Fest in Millennium Park! Approximately 2,000 seniors stopped by the CDEL table to learn about the ways CDEL can help low-income Chicago seniors. Thanks to the many CDEL staff members who stopped by to table for the event! |
| |
CDEL's Advanced Planning for Alzheimer's and Related Dementias program also had a tabling event at the Rush Minority Aging Research Study event and reached hundreds of people! This is CDEL's newest program and we are excited to share it with the community! |
