Blast from the Past

How did you learn or become involved with CDEL?

I was a newly admitted attorney and there was an article about CDEL’s unique model and the organization’s incredible mission in my high school’s quarterly newsletter, The Loyola Academy “Focus.”  Also, my family has been involved with a nonprofit organization located in the near western suburbs of Chicago that provides essential services to adults and children with disabilities for the past several decades. Ever since I was younger, I have always enjoyed working with individuals with disabilities, so I felt compelled to reach out to CDEL after reading the article. I was assigned my first pro bono matter, and I knew instantly that this is what I was supposed to do. In fact, I now dedicate my own legal practice to assisting people with disabilities and their family members.

Describe how you have supported CDEL over the years?

After handling a few legal matters for CDEL, I was invited to serve on the organization’s Board of Directors. I still remember the first board meeting I attended at Baker & McKenzie. I remember how impressed I was with the dedication to CDEL’s clients and mission demonstrated by each member – it was infectious. I was later appointed executive director and the rest is history. Working for CDEL and serving the organization’s deserving clients will always be one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I am honored to have been a small part of the tremendous work the organization accomplishes through its vast network of dedicated volunteers – I am in awe of where CDEL is today. 

There are many non-profits, why support CDEL?

There are so many wonderful legal service organizations for attorneys and legal professionals to get involved with in the Chicagoland area. Each one makes a profound difference in the lives of the people they serve. CDEL is so exceptional because of the enormous impact it makes with a relatively modest budget. Its small, but incredibly talented and devoted staff offers attorneys an opportunity to utilize their legal skills to help the most vulnerable members of our community. In other words, the organization cultivates a culture of service in Chicago’s legal community.

What is it about CDEL that inspires you to continue to show your support?

Ultimately, we are here for one reason and one reason only, to serve others, and CDEL provides this opportunity to serve the most underrepresented and marginalized members of our community. I encourage everyone in the legal profession to get involved in some way. Whether you give your time, talents, and/or treasures, it will be one of the best experiences of your legal career.
