CDEL Celebrates Pride!

June is Pride Month and CDEL is proud to celebrate LGBTQ+ Older Adults finalizing their advance directives. Because of lifetime experiences of discrimination, invalidation, and ongoing legal marginalization, many LGBTQ+ older adults experience disparities while aging and are more likely to have legal concerns especially about advance directives. 

CDEL holds a monthly community clinic at the Center on Addison in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago. The Center on Addison provides programming for LGBTQ+ older adults. Every month, CDEL volunteers assist LGBTQ+ clients with legal issues in a safe and affirming space. 

CDEL is proud to hold a SAGECare SAGE, Service and Advocacy for LGBTQ+ Elders Platinum Certification! SAGE certifies organizations that have committed to training their staff to be culturally responsive to the needs of LGBTQ+ elders.

CDEL has achieved the highest certification in 2022 and 2023. All of our employees and executive staff have completed training. This training ensures that CDEL is meeting the needs of its LGBTQ+ clients.

CDEL Holds TODI Workshop with Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation

CDEL held a Transfer on Death Instrument Workshop with the Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation (GAGDC). CDEL Summer Intern Jessica Hohlweg joined Staff Attorneys Marlo Pahl and Tiffany Clements for her first CDEL workshop.

There, they helped 9 clients complete their TODI’s. TODI’s are a great tool for clients to ensure their home stays in their family and avoids the difficult and costly process of probate.

Upon getting their TODI completed, one client said “It was easy, professional, and painless!”

Volunteer Attorneys Help Translate at CDEL POA Workshop

CDEL held a Power of Attorney workshop with new Pro Bono Partners Convergint and Mirae Law. A group of ten Convergint attorneys and law student interns joined 4 Mirae Law volunteers to assist 14 clients with Power of Attorney documents. Some of the Mirae Law volunteers also helped translate for our Korean speaking clients.

Thank you to our volunteers from Convergint and Mirae Law for joining us and helping translate!
