Please join CDEL's Board of Directors in participating in our 2022 Leadership Campaign. This is the second year CDEL's Board has stepped up and orchestrated an individual giving campaign in support of all of CDEL's programs, especially to support the return of our in person clinics and workshops. Please help us celebrate our return to the community by making a gift to support these programs.

CDEL Partners with the Center on Addison for a Proud to 
Thrive Workshop

On June 2nd, CDEL kicked off Pride Month with an in person Proud to Thrive (PTT) workshop with the Center on Addison. While there, CDEL staff and volunteers were able to assist 9 clients in getting 34 separate Powers of Attorney documents drafted, finalized, executed, witnessed and notarized. These documents ensure our clients choices are respected on who gets to make important healthcare and financial decisions on their behalf when they are not able. 

One client had this to say about their experience: "It was a very professional, agreeable, and affable experience. Thank you for your help!"

CDEL's Proud to Thrive for LGBT Elders community program provides legal services including advance directive workshops for low-income LGBT elders across Cook County.  CDEL's PTT provides legal services in LGBT affirming spaces in many of the same civil practice areas as CDEL, especially in the areas of estate planning, housing issues, and property tax and title issues to help address common concerns held by many LGBT elders.

CDEL Welcomes New Program Coordinator Aidan Swinford

We are happy to welcome our new Program Coordinator, Aidan Swinford to the CDEL team! Aidan will be assisting with scheduling clients for Community Clinics, as well as tracking data for CDEL's case management database.  Aidan joined us in May after graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a minor in Economics. 

Aidan on why he wanted to join CDEL's team: "I had worked with nonprofits before and wanted to work for an organization that was going to directly help those in the community. When I saw what CDEL does and the mission of the organization, I saw it was exactly the sort of place that aligned with those values, I look forward to getting to help with the clinics and scheduling, as well as learning more about the laws and policies that can help seniors or people with disabilities."

CDEL Returns to In Person TODI Workshops

Earlier this month, CDEL partnered with law firm Kirkland & Ellis to bring a return to our in person TODI Workshops. 10 attorneys from the Kirkland & Ellis team joined us and assisted 10 clients in executing 31 different documents including TODIs (Transfer on Death Instruments), Homeownership Checkup reports and more.  

TODI's are important because they help our clients leave or transfer their homes to their loved ones after death without having to go through the often lengthy and expensive process of probate.
