Support CDEL This Giving Tuesday!

Organized and persistent are two words that describe Chicago Austin neighborhood resident “Gloria” well. She is the kind of person who never gives up and fights for what she knows is right. So, when she faced unhealthy conditions in her apartment due to flooding, she advocated for herself to her landlord.   

Unfortunately, the landlord was unresponsive and refused to fix the persistent flooding into her unit whenever it rained.  As a housing voucher holder, Gloria next reached out to the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) to get an inspection and request improvement of her unit. However, when the time came for the inspection, CHA did not show. CHA then sent her a notice that it was terminating her housing voucher, stating she had not been home, even though the inspector did not arrive.  

 The fear and injustice of losing this housing voucher led Gloria to CDEL.  CDEL’s established presence in the Austin neighborhood at BUILD, Inc., allowed an attorney to step in right away to help Gloria right in the community she lives in. Together with CDEL, Gloria was able to make her voice heard and was able to successfully fight to keep her housing voucher. She can now focus her efforts on finding safe housing that better fits her needs.
